ACHIEVEMENTS

Participated in NYC World Maker Faire

At the World Maker Faire in Flushing, New York, our team D2NK presented our device AI4VI. All of us explained that the device uses an ultrasonic sensor to measure distances between objects. We completely improved on our last two prototypes by miniaturizing it and improving the battery life. At the Maker Faire we surprisingly we surprisingly met a visually impaired person, who was very kind and really liked our device. She liked how it was lightweight, but she also gave us valuable feedback that she wanted the beeps to be louder. In addition, we we interviewed by the Boy Scouts of America and they wanted to put our interview on YouTube. Not only did we get valuable feedback on our device, but it was also nice to walk around and see others devices and their improvements that they made. Overall, we really enjoyed the experience and it was nice to meet new people to share AI4VI.

Finalist award for Los Angeles Worldwide Paradigm Challenge

The Paradigm Challenge is an international competition accepting contestants from 9 to 18 years of age. Every year, there are different topics to choose from, ranging from agriculture to space technology. This year, for AI4VI and RestShare, we were finalists for the Challenge, and received a cash prize. Project Paradigm is just one of the challenges we applied to, and this project has enabled us to share and advance our prototypes.

Selected for both projects in top 99 finalists with cash awards.

Core Values Award at Razorback Invitational, Arkansas

In May 2017, the four of us were part of a robotics team that went to nationals for robotics in Arkansas for 5 days.  We competed against all across the world with teams from Brazil and even Japan! At this competition we were judged in robot design, core values, research, and our robot performance. At the end of the competition, we won the gracious professionalism award. The gracious professionalism award was an award part of the core values that states that we were part of a team that respects each other and works together efficiently and in a timely fashion. This competition taught us so much in socializing with different teams from different countries and the difference between competing with countries rather than teams from the same county. This trip was one of the most memorable and exciting trip for the four of us.

Winners at NYC Young Innovators to Watch Competition - ADVISE

For the Young Innovators to Watch Competition, we created ADVISE, which helps both the guide dog and the visually impaired human be alert and go around obstacles. It involves a Kinect sensor and the connected-component labeling algorithm to detect if there is an obstacle nearby. We presented this project in the convention in NYC and also tested out project on visually impaired people and received positive feedback.

Competed in Las Vegas Young Innovators to Watch - RestShare

We created the RestShare app because we realized that over 100 million lbs. of food is being thrown away every day. We visited local restaurants and soup kitchens to help us develop the solution and we were successful. The RestShare app will help millions of food-insecure people get a meal from their soup kitchen by allowing restaurants share leftover cooked, unserved food.
